HOLIDAY RACING

Stratford Carnival Concluded JUST SO WINS OPEN SIX AGAIN Victory in Ngaere Handicap Doubles to Valpre and Panorama

During the two days a total of 1773 ears were parked on the grounds. Though Corwen, second place winner in the maiden and Monsogne, winner of the principal event, were allowed to surprise investors, form showed a fair guide, favourites winning three of the events and returning second dividends in three others.

Mr B. N. Sandilands was in attendance as stipendiary steward. Following the hurdles event an inquiry was held concerning an allegation of interference by Royal Acre with Whisogne in the straight. After hearing the respective riders the committee come to the conclusion that any interference .had been unintentional and the rider of Royal Aero (H. Dulieu) was exonerated, it being taken into' consideration that an injured foot had prevented him from straightening up his horse as soon as he might otherwise have done. Following the County Hack L. Dulieu was fined £2 for failing to ride Singer out in the concluding stages, thereby losing third money. As on the first, day efficient administration was maintained by the various officials, all of whom merited commendation on their work.

Details of the concluding four events were as follow: —

MAKURI HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, of 170 so vs.; second horse to receive 35 sovs. and third horse 15 sovs. from the stakes. One mile and a half.

2 PANORAMA: Mrs 11. E. Nickoll’s b.g., aged, by Panmure —Overall, 10.1 (A. Jenkins) 1 7 JOKEFORM: C. E. Trott’s b.g., aged, by Monoform —Wairiki mare, 9.0 car. 9.2 (P. McGuire) 2 3 WHISOGNE: P. Tito’s ch.g., 6yrs by Bisogne —Whioi, 9.0 (T. Tito) 3

(Winner trained by P. Johnson, New Plymouth.)

Also started: 1 Royal Acre; 11.8 (H. Dulieu); 4 Quillfire, 9.2 (P. Brady); 6 Whenuanui, 9.0 ear. 9.8 (R. Eagar); S Coper, 9.0 (11. Mills); 9 Michael Shemose, 9.0 (K. Bedford); 5 Waitaunaha, 9.0 car. 9.2 (A. Linton). Koval Acre, with. £4OO more than the first "day’s hurdles winner, Panorama, was made favourite for the IMakuri Handicap which drew the full field of nine runners. Johcform ivas well down the list in public estimation and carried £660 less than the favourite. Quillfire led over the first half furlong from Whisogne and Whenuanui, but Whisogne was the pilot at the first fence and passing the stands showed the way for Whenuanui, Jokeform, Quillfire and Royal Acre, with Panorama tailing the field. Entering the back stretch Royal Acre moved up to take second berth behind Whisogne, with Jokeform still lying third, followed by Quillfire nnd Whenuanui, with Copey heading the others. Royal Acre took charge from the half-mile and at the last hurdle was slightly in front of Whisogne, Jokeform and Copey, with Panorama heading the others. Speeding for home the favourite looked a likely winner, but seemed t.o tire over the concluding half distance and could not hold off a series of sudden challenges, which left Panorama half a length in front of Jokeform at the judge’s box, with Whisogne only a head back third. Royal Acre was close up fourth, followed by Copey and Waitaunaha. Time, 2.52.

TOKO HIGfiIWETGHT HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.; second horse to receive 40 sovs. and third horse 20 sovs. from the stakes. Eight and a half furlongs. 2 POMPEIUS: C. McTnallv); 6 Vivo. 8.1 (W. Taylor); 7 Flying Shot, 8.0 (H. K. Alexander); 4 Aueitioneer, 8.0 (C. Goulsbro). Another full field appeared for the Toko Highweight. Manly was preferred to the extent of £75 before Pompeius, first day winner of the corresponding event. During the line up the rider of Pompeius (P. Brady) received a knock, necessitating his removal from the saddle, but remounted to the accompaniment of applause, which was repeated when lie entered the birdcage with the winner. Mint Leaf dwelt at the start. Manly ]ed along the straight from Flying Shot, Pompeius, Auctioneer, Vivo, Glona Bay and Kawhakina, but turning into the back stretch Flying Shot was making the pace for Pompeius, Kawhakina, Auctioneer, and Manly with Vivo bringing up the rear. At the half mile Pompeius. joined Flying Shot in the lead followed by Kawhakina, Auctioneer, Glena Bay and!

Following tlie sensational feat of Monsogne in defeating the sultry favourite Orazone in the Malone Memorial at the Stratford races yesterday, Orazone ? s stable mate, Just Sto, justified strong public support by winning the open six convincingly with Llanore a length away in second place. In this event Just So registered her second win at the meeting and was the most heavily backed favourite of the two days. Others to secure double wins were the hurdler Panorama and the sprinter Valpre. Good fields contested the various events and speculation was brisk though below the sum invested on the corresponding day last year, £25,249 going through the totalisator yesterday compared with £26,396 10s, a decline of £1147 10s. For the two days the total investments showed a decrease of £1464, the respective figures for 1929 and 1930 being £53,533 and £52,069. Gate receipts for the two days indicated only a slight drop in attendance, £2120 7s 6d being paid this year compared with £2142 6s 6d at the 1929 gathering.

Monaloff, in public opinion, proved a good thing beaten in the County Hack. Singer, the second choice, carried £3OO less than Monaloff and £7O more than the third fancy, Green Acre. Fortalice was first out from 'Monaloff, Green Acre and Latakia, but Green Acre moved up promptly to lead Our Nancy, Monaloff, Peg Black, and Latakia. With three furlongs to go Green Acre was still leading the same three in order and at the straight entrance Green Acre was well clear of Our Nancy and Peg Black, with Monaloff coming fast attended by Singer. In the run home Green Acre stayed on to beat Monaloff by two lengths, with Fortalice at Monaloff’s girth and clear of Singer, Latakia, Peg Black and! Our Nancy. Time, Ll 6 4-5.

NGAERE HANDICAP, of 259 sovs.; second horse to receive 50 sovs. and third horse 25 sovs. from the stakes. Six furlongs.

In the best betting race of the day, and second only to the cup event during the meeting, the public made the speedy Just So a decided -favourite with over £1350 among the eight runners in the open six. Melissa, as second fancy, was entrusted with slightly less than half of the favourite’s total. Good coinpartive support was given Llanore, Ilopwood, Gold Dawn and Maeroom. Ridgcniount was the only ■withdrawal. From a fair start Gold Dawn wn,s the early leader from Just So. Ilopwood and Llanore, but at the end of a furlong Tlopwood was in charge attended by Gold Dawn, Just So and Llanore with Oration in the rear. Coming to the three furlongs, Llanore moved up to take second place to Ilopwood with Just So lying third followed by Gold Dawn, Maeroom, and Melissa, while Monaghan dropped to the tail of the field. Hopwood and Llanore were together at the straight entrance clear of Just So, but, rapidly reducing the gap, the favourite took command at the half distance to beat Llanore by a length, with Hopwood ■half a length back third.
