BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Paten Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: Mr F. Earnsbottom (Mayor), Crs. C. Honeyfield, A. 'Christensen, F. Naismith, P. Pettigrew and C. Casey. REPORTS. The streets supervisor reported having carted 20 yards of metal from the Beach pit and put it on Middlesex, Richmond, Bedford, Norfolk, and Egmont Street South. The footpath in front of the town hall had been surfaced. Other 'works included chipping footpaths' in side streets, widening the crossing at the corner of Egmont and Surrey Streets, building up the shoulders of Bedford and Devon Streets and getting ready for tarsealing. The metalling of the back streets would be continued as time permitted. So far nothing had been done in connection with the painting and illuminating of the memorial in the triangle. Before this (work was commenced ho suggested it be raised IS inches in height and the base be extended in proportion to the additional height. This alteration would greatly improve the appearance of the whole structure. The electrical engineer reported that both power house plants had run satisfactorily, the units generated being hydro 16,364 and Diesel 12,250, making a peak load being carried by the Diesel (09 k.w.). The rainfall registered at the hydro was 1.61 inches. The low tension lines in Meredith Street had been reconstructed, one new pole being erected. The 230 volt lines had been extended from Egmont Street to the bowling green. Two electric stoves, two ice cream refrigerators, one 'water pump motor and one electric urn had been installed and connected to the mains. One old installation had been re-wired. The pipe line to the beach had been extended to supply the new bathing sheds and the Harbour Board’s steam plant. 'GENERAL. In reply to Mr T. Ross iter’s application for a verandah to his shop, it was resolved that this would be erected at a cost not exceeding £lO, provided he undertook to pay this at the rate of - 10s per month. The matter of special legislation con- J corning borough leases was briefly dis- j cussed, and it was agreed to leave the preparation of a local Bill in the hands of a sub-committee for presentation to 1 'the next session of Parliament. The Domain Board’s application to connect a drinking fountain near the domain gate with.the borough supply was granted. The Prime .Minister’s communication regarding Armistice Day observation was received. An application from Mrs A. Edser for the purchase of a borough section in Oxford Street for building purposes was granted, the purehas6 price being fixed at £25 'with a provision that an approved dwelling be erected. It was decided to impose the usual 10 per cent, penalty on all rates not >paid by December 21. The unsightliness of two borough sections in the main street was discussed, and it was decided that the owners be notified to fence the sections.

Mr L. Ilamerton was appointed dogtax collector for the ensuing year. Considerable discussion took place in reference to the formation of a Power Board for the Patea district. The Mayor stated he and the electrical engnecr had recently waited on Mr Kissell, Public Works engineer, and had ■been informed that provided the county and borough councils co-operated it was likely the power board could be formed. Nothing further could bo done in the matter until further official com. muniijatkm flvad been received from Wellington. PATEA BAND. RECITAL, ON SUNDAY. The Patea Municipal Band gave an interesting recital in the To'.vrn Hall on Sunday evening. The programme included a popular march, the hymn “ Nearer My God to Thee”; a selection, ‘‘Homo Again”; vocal duet by Mrs Masters and Mr C. Carey; song, “Down in the Forest,” by Miss F. Bongey; monologue, by Master Pauling; piano solo, “Coronach,” by Miss J. Sheild; and baritone solo, by Mr A. Reid. The band intends to give further recitals at an early date. CYCLING AT PATEA. On Saturday cycle races were held in ithe Patea Domain. Tihe events proved well worth watching. In the mile a good race ensued, Gunn winning by a length from Gordon. The three-mile race drew also a good °ptry. A. Clarkson was the winner, with Gunn lying a wheel back second.
