OPENING OF BOWLING SEASON. The Patea Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday. There was a. large number of visitors from Hawera and Waverley. The president, Mr P. Bourke, in wel- | coming- the visitors, expressed the hope that, they 'would enjoy the afternoon. [ Mrs Bourke then rolled up kitty, and followed on with the first bowl of the season. Matches- wore played during the afternoon. The monthly meeting of the Patea j School Committee was held on Friday, i Air R. E. Moore being in the chair. . It was ’decided to improve the Egrnont Street gateway and the memorial avenue. The latter work will be done by a working bee. The secretary reported no action had yet been taken in connection with laying a concrete kerb. It was decided to erect the kerb by means of working bees. Mr Matthews referred to the proficiency examination and said he believed there was now a desire on the department’s part to stiffen the examination with a view to reducing the number of pupils taking secondary j courses. CYCLING. The Carlyle Club last Saturday commenced track racing on the grass track at the Domain. SUNDAY SCHOOL BAZAAR. Last Saturday St. George’-; Sunday school held the annual bazaar. Alter the deduction of £lO for the support of a young student of the Atelanesian Mission, the remainder of the takings is devoted to the obtaining of annual prizes for’ the children.
