The difficulties which some hospital hoards, notably those m northern districts, in the collection of tees from Maori patients were explained to Sir Joseph Ward by a, big deputation from the Hospital .Board's’ Association at- Wellington yesterday. Sir Joseph pointed out that the Goverunic nt- had no funds on which it coulid draw in order to supplement the cost ot natives’ hospital treatment. He sympathised. with the association, which was in an awkward position. He would see if he could effect some means* of enabling boards to obtain money from the clients. Asked if a grant could not be made from the Maori Purposes Fund, Sir Joseph said he would baive to look into that. He did not know how these funds were drawn upon. The Hon. A. J. Stall worthy, Minister of Health, remarked that the burden did not fall entirely on boards. Oil the basis of two years’ deficiency there was a. shortage of £16,000 a year, and the I Government already provided half of that. £BOOO a year. The Government actually paid last year £l7,<X)(> for Maori sanitation ami heal fill purposes, a. higher sum than the boards bad to find in hosintal feu defaults. —Press Association.
