CAR STEALING.

Motor association’s precautions. APPROVED ii Y FARMERS' UNION. When the question of car stealing was being discussed by the South Taranaki executive of the Farmers’ Union at Hawera yesterday, reference was made to the service rendered by the Sjouth Taranaki Automobile Association and the measures taken to ensure that cars stolen should not get away out of the province. in the case' of a car being stolen, if the secretary of the Association were advised at any time of the number and make of the car, the police were informed and steps taken for recovery. It was resolved to send a letter to the South Taranaki Association expressing thanks for the care and trouble taken on behalf of motorists. The increase in the number of cases of illegal conversion of cars was brought up by a member who instanced the occurrence some time since at Mangatoki where apparently some persons tried several cars before driving away with one belonging to a local farmer.

Mi". J. Cocker said that on four consecutive nights cars had been stolen in Hawera and Eltliam. He considered that the fines inflicted in such cases were altogether too light, while the maximum penalty was three months in gaol.

The general opinion was that the penalty for the wrongful conversion of cars should be made more stringent. A resolution was passed to this effect and will be sent on to the Minister of Justice
