EXIT “K.Y.A"
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Now that the fight is over, weapons will be returned to the armoury, hut before putting mine away i would like to exercise the privilege of a veteran of the campaign to pass a few comments upon it. x'robabiy I was first into the field—many years a.yo, and witli a ditlerent regimental number, so to speak—and was one of the last to leave it. I have seen many adversaries arrive and depart, and to tlieir credit it is that, with but one exception, they have refrained from aiming so low as to splash the mud about, and consequently my stay in the trenen was quite tolerable, and even, pleasant. On the score of the loneliness 01 the position, however, I welcomed the arrival of reinforcements in the sector —nrstly Mr. Bone, and latterly Mr. Murdoch. 011 the other side 1 am especially grateful to Mr. Gane, of Normanby, and in all sincerity I thank him for making the bout so willing that 1 had to draw on the reserve stocks ol ammunition, the value of which is now apparent. No drama seems complete without a touch of comedy, and therefore while we indulged our serious conflicts we also had •our amusing interludes. 1 am not claiming credit for the victory.# It was the accomplishment of others to get the people thinking; it was mine to provide some of the subjects tor thought. Summing up, tempers may have been ruffled by m’y persistence, hut no damage to reputations lias resulted. The opinions expressed by me were solely my own, begotten of theoretical study and practical experience; and in order to absolve others who have been suspected of the authorship or m> letters,' and to repair friendships which, 1 hear, have been a little hit strained on account of that suspicion, I to-day cease to be ‘‘.Tv.V.A.,” and am, • Yours, etc., J. SWANSON. Hawera, Sept. 5, 1929. P.S.—l wish to thank you, sir, for the space allotted and the toleration shown. There may have been occasions when the interpretation “of public interest” seemed to leave room for doubt, but I invariably got the benefit of it. 1 have every confidence in the board, and. judged by the result of the poll, so have the ratepayers. —J.S.
