HAWERA SCOTTISH SOCIETY.

SOCIAL EVENING LAST NIGHT. Probably the best programme, arranged for a social evening of the I Hawera, Scottish Society was that presented last night at tho usual monthly gathering in the Foresters’ Hall. Visitors were present from Opunake, Pihama, Pa tea, Alokoia, Alanutahi and many other parts of the district, and the attendance was so great that it, taxed the accommodation of the hall to its utmost. Chieftain ,J. E. Campbell presided. The programme was varied in character, and thus suited all tastes. The performers included several singers from Pihama and Hawera alio had not previously )>eeii heard in a local hall, and they created a most favourable impression. The items included songs by Airs Jolly (Pihama), “Alerry Alonth of Alay; Airs Trotter (Opunake), “To a Aiiniature”; Airs Barclay (Alanutahi), “The Old Refrain” ; Air Stone. “Gladiator” ; Air G. H. Buckeridge, “Off to Philadelphia” ; Air Harold Ackroyd. “From Oberon in Fairyland”; Air D. Wards, “Rob Tanison’s Smithy.” Recitations were given by Miss L. Bullock, “Home, Sweet Home”; Miss Nonna Nixon, “Little Boy Blue”; violin duet, Miss Pinson and Alaster Ray Downey; and Highland dances, Aliss D. Nairn.

The programme concluded with an amusing sketch “The Boy Comes Home,” in which the characters were taken as follow : Uncle James, Mr L. A. Taylor; the hoy, Mr A. Gowie; Aunt Rmily. Miss Mathieson; the cook. Miss T. Ingram; the maid. Miss C. Holton. 9 If or the vocalists, the accompanists were Mrs L. A. Taylor and Miss K. Bm’keridge. and for the dances Piper Henson. The programme was organised by Mr I). McCormick, the ladies’ committee arranged the decorations, and Air Kirby tlie electric light, while a committee of ladies under the direction of Miss B. Among dispensed the supper. After supper dancing was enjoyed fur a couple of hours, and “Anld Lang Syne” concluded a vorv pleasant evening.
