TAXATION REMITTED.
AUCKLAND TROTTING 'MEETING. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND. (By Telegraph—Special to the Star.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. Government taxation will be remitted on the trotting meeting to be hold in Auckland to-day (Saturday) in aid of the earthquake relief funds. The concession was finally agreed to today by the Prime Minister (iSir Joseph Ward) in his capacity as Minister in Charge of Stamp Duties, following representations made by Mr G. Baildon, Mayor of Auckland. He pointed out particularly that the Government’s agreement to forgo its taxation would greatly assist the success of the meet, ing, for whiicli all assistance was being voluntarily given in view of the worthiness of the cause. There would be no free admissions, members’ complimentary tickets having been abolished. The Prime Minister said that there was no statutory authority for granting the remission of taxation, but in deference to representa!ions, he would make the concession which would require to be validated bv legislation.
