EARTHQUAKE RELIEF.

HAWERA FUNDS CLOSED. The subscription lists opened by the Borough Council and tne “Hawera Star” on b ana I t of the earthquake relief fund are now closed, and as a rpr sult of the joint appeal the sum of £1369 3s nas been collected. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Raoey) said this morning that the sum of £BB4 10s 9d had been, caleeted. and of that amount there was stild the ®um of £59 4 s to be forwarded. l'iie “Star” lia-s forwarded the sum of £437 15s 3d. and there is still ill hand. £46 17s, making the total received at tihiis office £484 12s 3d.

Mr Pacer said that- he could only once .again express his appreciation of the response made by the people, to the call for assistance. The contribution forwarded from this centre compa.redi very favourably with the contributions of other places of similar size and population. Mr Paeey also expressed his thanks to all those who had entered so whole-heartedly into the voluntary task of organising en-teitiainments and other means of raising money for the fund.
