A WORLD TOUR.
AUCKLAND DRIVER’S PROGRESS
At the end of June Mr. G. W. Allsop, the well-known motorist, who commenced a world tour in his large sedan car in July, 1927, had reached | Detroit, the nucleus of the American I motor industry. Writing from Detroit at the eud of June, Mr. Allsop- says: “We left Auckland in July, 1927, and have been on the go ever since, having motored 19,000 miles to date, and travelled 39,600 by car, boat, ami train. We expect to show well over the 50,000 mark by the time we are due back at Auckland, next Christmas. We spent 13 months motoring in Australia, Tasmania, and South Africa, ancVthen shipped to England, working our way up through Scotland to Aberdeen. Crossing to Belfast, we travelled up to the Giant’s Causeway, and then through to Dublin, finding the lakes of Kidarney not so beautiful as the New Zealand lakes. From Cork we shipped to Wales and motored to Land’sEnd. In January we crossed to France and spent three months there, and in Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. From Southampton wo shipped to Quebec, motoring to Montreal, Boston, New York, and the Niagara Falls. Our next run is to Chicago and I want to motor up to the top of Pike’s Peak at 14.000 ft. Then wo will run north to Yellowstone Park, and then on to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and then up to San Francisco, where we will take the boat to' Wellington.
In crossing from Adelaide to Perth Mr. Allsop carried 50 gallons of petrel on the desert section. At one point he was asked 5s a. gallon, but found that the price was due to the fact that the fuel had to be earrieed 110 miles by a camel team. Mr. Allsop adds that in all his touring he has covered every class of road surface, and has found concrete the favoured paving for heaviest service.
