ANNUAL DANCE PI? OF ITS. T'!io. monthly meeting of the Hawera Alain School Committee was held last, evening. There were present: Dr. W. M. Thomson (chairman), Messrs M. I?. Jones, M. A. Rowlands, N. Kenyon. C. \Y. Crutch, J, D. Tait, and P. O. Veale (hon. secretary). Answering a question concerning

the work of improvement- being carried out on the infant school ground, Mr Voale said that £IOO had already been expended. It was expected that with the subsidy approximately £260 would he available. Details of receipts and expenses in respect of the school ball were given by Mr Voale, who stated in conclusion that it appeared the net profit would he approximately £57. Last year the profit amounted' to £4O. SERVICES APPRECIATED.

The chairman, the secretary, and other speakers ref ex-red in terms of appreciation to the work carried out by the ladies’ committee. A vote of thanks was accorded the convenor (Mrs J. W. Harding) and those associated with her in appreciation of their services in connection with the hall, and the chairmen and secretary were appointed to arrange for the entertainment at a social evening of the ladies’ committee.

The. preparatory and supervisory work of the school teaching staff in connection with the hall provided a. subject for further favourable comment.

The secretary called attention to voluntary assistance given by Mr Pettett, and it was decided to forward a letter of thanks to that gentleman. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.

The headmaster (Mr J. W. Thomas) reported l that the avex-age attendance for the quarter had been 549, with an average roll number of 626. Owing to an epidemic of influenza, the quarter’s attendance would be excluded from the capitation calculation, as more than 10 per cent of pupils on an avei*ago had been absent daily. Fortyseven children were admitted, and 1 an equal number withdrawn during the quarter.

Miss Terry, infant mistress, had boon absent since August 8 owing to a serious illness of her sister, and Miss Chapman had been officiating as relieving teacher. The school closed for the term holidays on August 23, and would roopon on September 10.

Referring to the school hall on August 23, flic headmaster extended thank's to parents for the interest evinced in nroviding costumes for the children. “Over 400 were in fancy dress, providing a brilliant- display.” continued Mr Thomas. “The parents also gave liberally towards providing supper.” He also expressed thanks to the ladies committee, to the members ol the school staff who assisted in the administration and preparation, and to Mrs Muir, who attended daily for some three weeks to olav for the- children s practices.
