i LADIES’ TOURNEY AT GISBORNE FOURTEEN TEAMS TO TAKE PART illy Telegraph—r-ress Association.,' GISBORNE, Aug. 28. The New Zealand ladies’ hockej tournament will commence to-morrow and present prospects arc for fine wea tlier. Twelve visiting teams Aucklun; (2), Bush Union, Canterbury, Fasten (Southland), Hawke’s Bay, Rotorua Ruahinc (Damn e video), South Canter bury, Southland, Wairarapa. and Wei lington—will participate, with twe teams from Poverty Bay, a total of 1-1 teams. All tiro visiting teams are now in. Gisborne. The visitors were accorded a reception this evening, wih'en a welcome was extended by the Mayor, Mr D. W. Coleman and other speakers. There was a very largo attendance. It ds estimated that 230 hockey visitors are in Gisborne. Of that number about 170 have been billeted by residents of the town. The tournament will open to-morrow afternoon, three grounds being ased. The draw for the opening day is:—A section: Poverty Bay A v. South Canterbury; Rotorua v. Bush; Ruahine (Dannevirke) v. Auckland A; Southland a bye. B section: Hawke’s Bay v. Canterbury; Wairarapa v. Auckland 8; Wellington v. Poverty Bay B; Eastern (Southland) a. bye. A very full programme of entertainments has been arranged for the visitors. The most interesting function will be on Sunday, when the visitors will be motored to To Kanaka, 19 miles from Gisborne. There they will be the guests of residents- and will be accorded a typical welcome by the Maoris. -SEVEN-ASIDE TOURNEY. The annual men’s seven-aside hockey tourney for the Sutton Cup, (won last year by Mangatoki, was played on King Edward Park yesterday afternoon in glorious weather and before a fair attendance. 1 Five teams competed, each playing j the others for two spells of seven minutes each. Competition was keen, and good play was witnessed. Manaia proved the winners, going through without defeat, but they were .closely followed by Ilawera C and Otakcho, who finished up a point behind the winners. Mangatoki did not -compete. At the conclusion the trophy was presented to the winning team by Mr E. Fryer, who congratulated ail on the good play that had been witnessed. Results were as follow: — First Round. —Otakeho 1 v. Hawera A nil; Ilawera C 1 v. ITawora B nil; Manaia a bye. Second Round. —Hawera iB 3 v. 'Hawera A nil; Manaia 1 v. Otakeho nil; H.o|\vorn 'O a bye. * Third Round.—llawera B nil v.'
