THE COMPETITIONS.

LAST NIGHT’S SESSION

TALENTED PERFORMERS. For the continuation of the Haivera. Competitions tlie Opera House was packed last night, not a seat being empty. The programme, as on preceding nights, was diversified- and varied, dancing, singing, elocution and 1 instrumental items forming a, pleasing miscellany. A high standard was revealed throughout, and the judges, in their remarks at the conclusion of the programme, were very complimentary in their references to the ability of district competitors Sixteen classes were decided, and the management was such that there was a minimum of delay between items. Results were as follow :

TEST CONTRALTO SOLO “Still as the Night.”

Miss Jean AlcGlaslian 1 Airs C. G. Sunderland $ Also competed: Aliss AY. \ Hoddle Miss Ruth Alills.

The winner, commented the judge, had a very premising voice, and made good use of crescendo, but her intonation was uncertain in places. Nevertheless, it was quite a carefully studied performance. Airs Sunderland also possessed good quality of voice, and gave an interesting rendering. RECITATION IN COSTUME. Own selection; 10 to 14 years. Joan Thomas 1 Joyce Goodwin and Joyce Knightbridge (equal) 2 Twenty competitors. Alost of tlie items chosen in this class, commented the judge, were not strictly recitations in costume ; rather they were in the nature of character sketches. However, as all had adopted this attitudee, lie had treated them accordingly. The winner had made a good effort in a difficult) item. Regarding the pronunciation of the children. he wanted to point out that syllables should he pronounced cleanly, but this ’.should not ho carried to the point of exaggeration or affectation.
