SHOPKEEPERS BEFORE THE COURT. INVERCARGILL. Aug. 2S. Several shopkeepers were before the court to-day on charges of selling tobacco after hours, and of failing to notify the inspector that they sold tobacco. Fines ranging from £3 to £5 were imposed. CONSTABLE! FINED £2. DUNEDIN, Aug. 28. Leonard Garlick, a police constable, was fined £2 for being on the premises of the Port Chalmers Hotel. . A sergeant gave evidence that the defendant was on night duty at the time.. Witness saw the door opened by the licensee and defendant stepped out in uniform. Defendant said he had entered the hotel and taken the names of men in the bar on a piece of note paper. He was neither drinking nor loitering in the hotel. The magistrate said the sergeant’s evidence was corroborated by another constable, and he held'that defendant was unlawfully on the premises. FURTHER REMAND GRANTED. DUNEDIN, Aug. 28 William Henry Brauman, charged with the murder of his wife at St. Clair by shooting on August 7, was further remanded till September 11.
