After an exciting olta.se down the river Hooghly, rummaging officers belonging to the Calcutta Customs 'last night- made a. haul of 1175 ounces of cocaine, valued ah over £13,000, from a fishing smack. Observing the smack to be moving suspiciously away from the side; of a steamer, .the officials pursued 1 it, instructing the oarsmen t-o dip their oars as .silently as possible. The smugglers became aware of the pursuit and immediately pulled away, an exciting race ultimately resulting in their being overtaken. The smugglers jumped! overhoard, abandoning forty-seven tins, each containing twenty-five ounces of cocaine.
