Osborne said that the idea wag widely held by American surgeons that a combined local and general anaesthetic prevented shock. This was incorrect, because the real cause of shock was. a poison called hystamine, which w;as freed whenever the tissue was injured. Prevention should be obtained by the maximum avoidance of injuring the tissues.
