AWATUNA.

v (From Our Own Correspondent.) MEETING OF SCHOOL COMM ITT El

The monthly meeting of the Awatuna School Committee took place last Tuesday, Messrs FL. Davison (chairman), B. Alty, E. Hutchings. and L. Nieholls being present. The head teacher (Mr. C. Arthur) reported that the attendance had been, keeping up as well as could he expected when so much illness was prevalent. In referring to the agriculture instructor’s report? he drew attention to the need of jiivparing the ground for this year’s treeplanting. when several gaps, caused by rough weather, would need replanting. In connection with tile various school matches played this winter, the head teacher stated that ii was most pleasing ami helpful to school activities to record the way in which parents had come forward with their cars to take the loot-ball ami basketball teams to play other schools.

i GENERAL. 1 U.o pi'osjtect. of a team from tliis . part of Taranaki capturing the coveted > McMasters football shield lias been the - topic of the week, though the inanv - who fully expected Star to be victorii ous are delighted to have been proved - false prophets. From 11 o’clock on- ■ wards on Saturday there was almost a procession through Awatuna of cars, of all makes, colours, sizes and ages! bound for Taumata Park to witness what turned out to be a highly popular victory. Cold and trying weather continues, to the detriment of cows just calved as well as to farm interests generally. The ground is wet and cold, needing sun to put heart into the stock and quicken growth. News arrived at the week-end that the Awatuna school had been awarded f°ur first prizes for writing in the British and Colonial Industries competition. Entries for this competition were sent from scores of schools in the North Island, so the prize-winners will be fully justified to a pat on the back. The successful children were Nina Earquhar, Joan Arthur, Greg. Lind and Bobbie Alty, each of whom is to receive a. half guinea trophy. The latter part of Friday afternoon was much enjoyed by the I’e Kiri and Awatuna senior pupils, when the latter played a very even game of basketball with the Te Kiri gilds, who won by S points t<> Mi.sk Wood was referee. The boys of both schools, had a pick-up practice game under the supervision and able instruction of Mr. Nobbs, who prior to the game gave the players some idea of the theory of Rugby by means of blackboard illustrations and diagrams. Both contests' were played at Te Kiri, the conveying of the children being due to the kindness of Messrs Parkes anil Jones and Mrs. Nieholls, who offered their ears for the purpose.

—Spinsters, bachelors, and benedicts, too, in all probability, are looking forward to next Friday evening, when the Spinsters’ and Bachelors’ dance will take place at the Awatuna hall. So far as local dances are concerned there have been fewer this winter than for some years, neither has there been tin 1 usual series of euchre parties, so that it is anticipated there will be a record local, attendance as well as numerous Outside visitors.
