CONSTRUCTION OF CRUISERS. DEFERRED IN TJ.S.A. PRESIDENT HOPES FOR, PARITY. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) Received 11.35 a.m. to-day. WASHINGTON, July 24. President Hoover has announced that the United! States would not lay down the keels’ of three cruisers until an opportunity had been given for consideration of tire effect- those cruisers would (have upon the final agreement for parity which he hopes to reach with Great Britain. The President stated: Mr MacDonald's statement marks a new departure in the discussion on naval disarmament.” Responding to Mr Maoßonadd’s statement made in the House of Cloimmoniy. that he hoped to visit Americain October. President Hoover declared, “American people are greatly complimented by his proposed visit-, and ho will find universal welcome.’’

in an announcement referring to- the decision to postpone consideration ot three (J.S. cruisers of the 1929 programme, President Hoover said that the Rt. Hon. Ramsay MacDonald Laid introduced the principle of parity, which we have now adopted, and its consummation means that Britain and the United States henceforth are riot to compete in armament .as potential opponents, hut to co-operate as friends in the reduction of .it.” He asserted that the United States joins the British Prime Minister in his efforts towards disarmament in the same spirit- of goodwill as indicated by the decision to defer the construction of certain portions of tliis year’s British naval pro gramme.
