NO COMPROMISE.
IN MINING DISPUTE. A FRUITLESS CONFERENCE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegrapfi Copyright.) i (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY. July 18. Less than half an hour’s discussion to-day sounded the death knell of the conference between the mining industry unions and the eoail proprietors arranged by the Royal Commission which is inquiring into the conditions in the coal industry. The unions stated they had nothing to offer in the way of a compromise I and the owners had no solution which would satisfy all parties. A joint statement to this effect was issued by the repres-enta.tivos of the p<airtieis at the* close of the conference, and. the commission thereupon resumed its investigation. The commission, seeking a means for the re-opening of the idle pits by private interviews, asked the parties to meet to see whether there was any hope of a compromise. At a conference last Friday the owners offered to accept a reduction in price of Is a ton if the miners would accept reduced wages, but no agreement was reached.
