OBITUARY.
—<?> COMMISSIONER BOOTH TI CKER. Received 10.35 a.m. to-dav. LONDON. July 17. ' The death is- reported of Commissioner Booth Tucker, of the Salvation Army, aged 76.
Commissioner Booth Tucker, who was hoi'n in India in 1853, inaugurated Salvation Army work in that country in ISB2. Ho was a son-in-law of the founder of the Salvation Army (General Willi aim Booth). Before joining the Salvation Army in 1881, tile Commissioner had been in the Punjab Civil Service for a'number of years. He continued in charge of the Army’s work in India till 1891, when he was appointed foreign secretary at the London headquarters-. which post- he held for five years. He afterwards was commander of the Army in America until 1904, when lie was reappointed foreign secretary at international headquarters. He returned to India in 1907 as special commissioner and his work there included the. inauguration of silk and weaving schools, agricultural settlements and reformatory work among Indian criminal tribes and released prisoners. He was awarded the Kaiser-i-Hind gold medal in 1913 and returned to England in* 1919, since when he lias been travelling commissioner. He has also written a number of books dealing with his work in India.
