KAKARAMEA.

FORTHCOMING SHOW

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

A meeting of the committee and stewards of the fort-booming show of the Kakaramea Sports and Agricultural Association was held on Monday night, when practically all members were present A lot of routine business was transacted, and everything was well forward for the 17th inst. The secretary reported that +-here was a lot of inquiry from horse owners outside the district, and everything pointed to a very successful day’s sport. Mr. \ intent of Stratford is erecting a. large booth for the luncheon and afternoon tea. „ „

Messrs. S. McDonald and W. Saunders have promised to chain harrow the large- paddock where the sports are held, using their milk lorries to draw the harrows.

It was arranged that everyone meet on Monday the loth inst., to get the ground in order, erect jumps, etc. Four or five valuable silver cups to he competed for, are on view in Mr. inchester’s window. The open leaping competition having been won by Mr. Mercers “Gilgni” last year, for the third time, the cup became his property. The Association have secured another cup for the event, a very neat solid silver 20-guinea cup, and as this event carries £ls in cash in addition to the cup, it is well worth competing for The trophies for the three trotting events are also very liberal and should draw good fields. An extra class in the heifer class has been added to the programme, that of yearling heifers. GENERAL. The local school committee recently installed a hydraulic ram fed from a good spring t-o supply drinking water for the children, as the tanks supplied by the Department were quite inadequate during the dry spell. There is a lot of work to be done yet to get the grounds in. order, and it is to he hoped that householders, especially parents with children attending the school will roll up on Monday night next, where a new committee is to he elected. Parents with children attending should take an interest and not expect those who have no children attending the school to carry on the work and give their time year after year. Three members of the committee- have served for over 12 years, and two of them have had no children at the school for some years. So it is clearly the duty of young fathers to undertake a- shaie of the work. The district lias a- good school and good teachers, and the only thing lacking is| pleasant surroundings for the children, which the parents themselves can supply if they will only take the trouble. The old committee is willing to step down and bequeath to the newcomers a credit balance and not a deficit in the school accounts.
