LIGHT HARNESS SPORT

HAWERA CLUB’S MEETING. CUP RACE TO LINKMAN. GOOD PUBLIC SUPPORT. Chilly weather with cloudy skies from which the sun shone intermittently ruled for the opening of the Hawera Trotting Club’s annual meeting on the: Egmont course to-da.y, but despite the threat of inclement conditions the enclosures were thronged by a' large assembly of patrons drawn from all parts of the province and with a sprinkling of visitors from further afield.

Though well drenched during the heavy rain of the previous two days the course was drying and afforded a good turf in excellent condition for racing. The various appointments were in good order and capable attention was given to the administrative duties by the officials combining with the president (Mr B. McCatrthy) and the secretary (Mr E. P. Cox). Mr J. Gray officiated as honary judge and Mr A. Morse as starter released the fields handicapped by Mr C. E. Goosman. Prior to the commencement of the racing the judicial committee met to consider the case of Ulcelele Lady, which was among the acceptors on the limit mark for the second and fifth events. It was found that Ukulele Lady had been wrongly nominated, the owner failing to state that she was late- Pandora of Australia. The committee exonerated the handicapper from any blame: with respect to the handicapping, and as an outcome the mare was scratched voluntarily by the owner for the day’s engagements. Tb ( . Vup race was contested by a good field of Hi in which the honours went to the 'Christchurch gelding Linkman by half a length after a great finish with tlu' Loiigburii mare, Derby Lynn, which had been well placed throughout. Immediately following the race the cup was presented to the owner-driver, Mr V. Aiborn, addressing whom Mr B. McCarthy, the president of the club, extended congratulations upon the showing of th c Canterbury horse. The win had been a very meritorious one, and the speaker trusted that future rears would see Mr Aiborn here again. Mrs McCarthy then presented the trophy to the* winner, following which Air Aiborn. in the course of a brief reply, said that it was nine years since lie had Avon a cup, and that altogether he had been second in cup events nine times. Cheers were then given for him on the call of the president. Results received up to, the time the “Stax” went to press were as follow: AUROA HANDICAP, of 200 so vs.; second horse 35 sovs. and third horse 15 sows, out of the stake. _ One mile and a half.
