SOUTH TARANAKI TOURNAMENT RAIN MARS OPENING PLAY. Unpromising weather conditions prevailed for the opiening of the sixth Easter South Taranaki bowling tournament yesterday morning, and it was not. long* before rain fell, necessitating ; an abandonment of play for the day in the afternoon. Formerly restricted to clubs in the Taranaki Centre, the tournament was this year thrown open to outside clubs, but few. of tlie latter competed. However, the response from clubs in the centre was excellent, no less than 36 entering. Yesterday’s play took place on three greens—Hawera, Park and Kaponga —and at each a welcome was accorded to the visitors. The speaker at tlie Park green was Mr J. Foy, president of the Taranaki Centre; at the Hawera green Mr G. A. Burgess, president of: the Hawera Clul>; and at Kaponga Mr F. A. Quin, president of the Park Club. Three days are being devoted to section play, and it is not anticipated I that the tournament will he concluded I till Wednesday.
