WEATHER AFFECTS ATTENDANCE BALANCE OF RESULTS. Despite the unpromising weather the attendance at the A. and I’. Association’s gymkhana on the showgrounds vesterday afternoon swelled to a. laigc figure, but the takings were considerably below those of last year. The opportunity was taken during the afternoon to" present illuminated addresses to the Hawera Fire Brigade and Municipal Band in recognition of their recent successes in Dominion competition, t'he presentations being made by the Mayor (Mr E. A. Pacey). These proceedings are reported in another column. Considerable interest was taken m a buck-jumping challenge match between J. 11. Clement, of Hawera, New Zealand champion, and L. Goodger, junr., also of Hawera, challenger, the latter being adjudged the winner after a good contest. . . During the afternoon an exhibition of trotting was given by .Koliarn and Worthv Bingen, both doing three Bps at the* rate of 2.45 for the mile. In the athletic' section S. Lay, the Australian and Now Zealand javelin champion, threw the implement -OSft 10-Jin, a couple of feet more than his 'officially recognised record throw, but several feet short of what ho has done at recent meetings.
