GIRL GUIDES.

FAREWELL TO MISS BALL ANTING The patrol leaders of the four companies of the Haivera Girl Guides gave a jolly party in the Scout hail Jast evening in honour of Miss Ballantine, the popular captain of the second company. who is leaving Hawera on an extended holiday abroad. There were present a full muster of the four companies and their officers, a number of Brownies, Mrs. Pacey (president) and the members of the local association executive committee, and a large number’ of parents and friends of the Guides. After tea, provided and presided over by Guides, a happy time was spent in games and campfire songs. Mrs. King, captain of the first company, then presented Miss Ballantine, on behalf of her fellow captains and lieutenants, with an autograph album containing the names and addresses of all Guides and Guiders and of the committee. She also wished Miss Ballantine a happy time abroad and a safe return, and spoke of her good work amongst Guides. Miss Stewart, captain of the third company, also spoke of the good work done by’ Miss Ballantine and wished her Godspeed and a safe return. On risiiig to respond, the captain was greeted with musical honours and rousing cheers. After thanking the captains for their gift, she told the Guides what a. means of' communication the autograph book would be amongst other Guides in the countries she intended to visit. She exhorted all Guides to be loyal to their captains, as it was upon them the greater part of the work of the movement descended. Mrs. Pacey, on behalf of the members of the executive committee, presented Captain Ballantine with a “sweet” bouquet. In a very happy speech Mrs. Pacey wished Miss Ballantine much happiness and benefit from her holiday and a safe return. The old Scotch song “Will ye no’ come hack again” was lieartliy sung by the Guides, and afterwards Miss Ballantine thanked the committee and all present ior their help in her work and for the party organised in her honour. The singing of the National Anthem and “Taps” brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. During the evening it was found that seventy-four Guides were present, besides a large number of officers and Brownies. This speaks well for the progress of the Guide movement in Hawera.
