TOSSED BY TEMPEST
THE ELEANOR BOLLING.
SHIP UNDER WATER.
A ROUGH PASSAGE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, March 7. “Fifteen days of tempest, nine hours of catim” describes the latest trip of ■the Eleanor Bolling, which returned during yesterday afternoon after a run of 1(KX) miles towards the Bay of ; Whales. For ten days the shin was awash fore and aft. On February' 20 there were 12 feet of water in the afterhold, caused by .seas pouring down the ventilators. The ship had been purposely loaded down aft for the ice passage, but the water in the hold' made her dangerous, and l bagged coal was shifted promptly to reduce the hazard. Both the Eleanor Boiling and the City of New York (now 800 miles from Otago Heads) will probably winter ait Port Chalmers.
Before the Eleanor Bolling left Dunedin on this trip Mr Brophy, the second in command, radioed his resignation to Commander Byrd, who has declined to accept it, giving Mr Brophy indefinite leave of absence, which, it is understood, wild he spent in Now Zealand in business.
