NOTES AND COMMENTS, (By “Maecenas.”) Prior to the closing of nominations for the Hazlett Memorial it looked any odds on Limerick having very poor opposition, lienee his trainer gave Limerick only light tasks; but when it became known that the well-seasoned Aussie would oppose Limerick the latter had to be “hustled” in his work. It is possible such will react on Limerick later. Pink Coat-, the South Island two- ' year-old, who lias greatly impressed those that have seen him win, is a good advertisement for the young sire Hunting Song. As usual, the nominations received for the Wellington Racing Club meeting to he held next month arc large and representative. A few horses from this province are engaged, but they arc not as numerous, as is generally the case. Tho fact of Commendation not being nominated for the Thompson Handicap will cause surprise; lie is engaged in the North Island Challenge Stakes, to be run the same day. The latter event is run over seven furlongs, which is a furlong less than the distance of the Thompson Handicap. Both events are of equal value, namely, £1(4)0. ; It is generally agreed that Limerick , was not fully wound-up when he went out for the recently-run Hazlett. Ale- ■ morial. As he had a very hard race, in an effort to hold off Aussie, it will be interesting to see if the gallop bad a detrimental effect on Limerick, as is , often the case under similar conditions. , With such opponents as Gothic, Mollison, and Statesman to heat in Aus- , tralia, Limerick will need to be at bis ; best. i Mollison was a high-class two-year-old, and at that age nothing he mot in Australia-could extend him. He began bis three-vear-old career in equal- ' |y brilliant- fashion by- beating the best ' of bis age over seven and nine fur- , longs courses. Mollison could only finish third in tho Australian ."Jockey Club Derby (won by Prince Humphrey), but it was the distance and the manner in which Mollison was ridden that hr-oualit detent about, and the .race eviclently gave •tliis. "reat ipalloper a- setback, as a few days later lie was beaten out of a place over the mile of the Caulfield Guineas. Obviously this was

not Mollison’s right form, so lie was spelled. Paganelli is not nominated for thf six furlong events at the coming meeting of the Wellington Racing Club but he figures in the North Islanc Challenge Stakes (seven furlongs) anc Thompson Handicap (one mile). Paganelli carries his head very high, a feature that judges consider a detrimenf when racing over any but sprint courses, and while Paganelli showed excellent finishing qualities in the closing stages of the recently run Taranaki and Jackson Stakes (both of which lie won), we doubt whether the son of Lord Q uex I s capable of . winning over a mile course in such company as is likely to start in the Thompson Handicap. Just here it may be stated that trainer M. Carroll considers Paganelli is capable of running a good ten furlongs, and, being the gelding’s trainer, his opinion is worthy of consideration.
