The company only permits the appartus to be used for talkies produced by seven American film producing firms, and thus the effect of the scheme would. be to defeat the Quota Act. This is giving the British industry a claim for Government intervention. LONDON, Feb. 25. Joseph Clark, who was sentenced to death on February 5 on his pleading guilty to a charge of strangling Mrs. Fontaine his fiancee’s mother, withdrew the’plea and appealed. His counsel pointed out that the only evidence was his own confession. The appeal was dismissed. Clark said that as soon as he recovered his head he tried to lift the woman and let her breathe, but had not enough strength.. Ihe court pointed out that Clark, directly after the deed, tried to kill tbe daughter in the same way.
