THREE. CANDIDATES IN ACTION. WELLINGTON Feb. 22. The Haiwera chub athletes, H. J. C. Kelson, J. A. Hamilton, and L. Gar. rett, were the only representatives of the Wanganui—Taranaki centre to appear at the opening of the New Zealand amateur athletic championships this, afternoon, the most notable being Kelson, who took: third position among five riders in the faster of the two 'heats of the mile cycle. He wasi at the tail of the field when the last lap bell sounded, but faltered after making a fine ibid down the back stretch and. wais crowded at the home turn. He came again with a strong finish to secure third place' and to qualify for the final, within three parts of a length of Gone (Wellington) whqi was _ two length behind ‘the winner, O’brien (Canterbury. In his heat of the half-mile cycle, Kelseir was a close' fourth. Hamilton got the worst of the jump out in his heat of the 100 yards, but finished within inches of the second •and third men who were almost in a line about If- yards behind the Wellington flyer, Jenkins. Another fourth place was registered by Hamilton in his heat of 220 yards, the third man beating Hamilton by about a foot only. . ■ Garrett went well for two. miles m the three* mile run, but found Savida'n’s pace too strenuous, and he retired after doing two and a-quarter miles.

As the- discus throw event was won with, an effort of 127 feet, with one of 111 feet 53 indies in second position, it would appear that L. Hunt of Hawera, who -recorded) 114 feet 9 incshes at the centre championships two weeks ago, and who lias previously dene 133 feet 101- indies, would- liave been certain of a place had he appeared to contest the title this afternoon. To-morrow Kelson is to- appear in the mile and three mile cycflennals,_ while the record lioMer, S. A. Lay, will defend hi® javelin throw title and L. New all, also of the Hawera dub, will contest the 120 yards hurdles and the long jump. The only other representative of the centre at present here is the lady -runner, Miss J. Greagor, of Wanganui.
