A pioneer .settler of Taranaki pasaad away at Oka.to on Tuesday in the person of Mr John Pearce. His parentis, the late Mr and Mas James Pearce, came from England in the Amdlia Thompson, .arriving at New Plymouth on September 3, 1841, and he was bom on June 18, 1846. With the women and other children Mr Pearce was taken to Nelson when the Maori '.trouble broke out. but he returned at the age of 14 and drove his father’s bullock team for military purposes. Later Mr Pearce took over his father’s farm at Tataraimaka, Mr Pearce shared in the pibl'ic life of.the community by serving on road boards and dairy factory directorates, and he took an active interest in the Methodist and Anglican Churches of recent years and! earlier when the Rev. J. Whiteley and the Rev. R. H. Brown visited the coast, and they had many adventures together. Mrs Pearce is still ‘living and there are two daughters and a son (Mrs E. V . Guy. of Fell ding. Miss H. Pearee of Okato .and Mr B. Pearce of New Plymouth!'. Mrs R. Foreman (Hawera.) and Me s dames W. Rowe and \\. And raw’s (New Plymouth) are sisters ol the late Mr Pearce.
