ALTERATION AT THAMES. SATURDAY DISCARDED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) THAMES, Feb. 1. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, when it was decided to revert to mid-week half holiday on Thursday. For the last nine years Saturday has been observed Arguments were brought forward that Thames was now more of an agricultural centre than a mining town. Consequently the councillors consider that the farmers’ mews should be taken into account. A petition presented desiring that no change be made was signed by thirty-seven shopkeepers. Forty-eight shopkeepers signed a counter-petition which was supported by 228 residents and 132 country people. The Mayor said it was clearly in the interests of business to make the alteration. The motion was carried unanimously.
