THE SUMMER MEETING.

FAVOURABLE OPENING CONDITIONS. FIRST EVENT TO VEIXATIOUS. Mild, hazy weataier with, a light temperate breeze lifting the flags in an occasional flutter favoured the opening to-day of the Egniont Racing Club's summer meeting and shortly before mid-day the first event was presented before a large assembly of sporting patrons recruited from all parts of the province with a sprinkling of visitors from even further afield.

Handy sized fields of good quality performers gave indication in the acceptances of thrilling sport. The presence of Messrs C. O’Connor at the barrier and Mr W. P.. Russell in the judge’s box ensured expert attention to those important, duties, and a capable staff was present to combine with the president (Mr J. Gray) and "the secretary (Mr E. P. Cox) in the various other phases of administration.

Showing a good sole of grass,. the track was firm and in ideal condition for racing and reflected credit on the preparatory work of the caretaker, Mr A. Mose and his staff, while the smooth stretches of lawn and the picturesque flower beds gave evidence of the care bestowed by Mr Stevenson and his assistants.

Vivo, Horomea and Vexatious were first to show out. but passing- the stands Abbot’s Delight was in front from Asleep, Royal 1 Acre. Atareria and Vivo. Going into. the back, Asleep took the van, attended by Abbot’s Delight, Atareria, Vivo. ,Royal Acre, Puwhero and Glenganiff. The last-named was moving up and across the top was lying third behind Vivo and Atareria. The throe led into the final distance ahead of Royaill Acre, Vexatious and Asleep, but in the run home Vexatious came up with Polyphemus in attendance, first place going to Vexatious by a length and a half, with Rloyal Acre onlv a head behind Polyphemus. Atareria was fourth, (attended' tov Glengariff, with a big gap to Vivo, Puwhero and, Asleep. Time, 2.47.

Talisker was- the only withdrawal from .the principal event-, eight appearing in the line up. Vertigern was public choice though Bright Glow carried only £3O less. Yoima, the fourth preference, was given comparatively poor support with £350 less than the favourite, while Hyjjanna was sixth fancy with £45 less than Yoma. Star Area was first to show out and led in the early stages from Mendip, Bli Bright Glow, Vertigern, Yoma, Rapine, and Hynanna. Rounding . the . straight entrance on the first circuit Blimp took second place to Star Area and led past the stands, with Mendip third and a fairly close field showing Bright Glow, Vertigern, Rapine, Yoma and Hynanna in that -order. The turn into- the back found Blimp and Star Area together, and at the three furlongs the pair were a couple of lengths clear of Bright Glow in front of Mendip with Vertigern and Rapine on terms just clear of Yoma and Hynanna. Turning for home the leading order was Star Area, Blimp, Hynana and Bright Glow, with Yoma tailing the field, but, well ridden on the outside, Yoma improved from the half -distance to- cut down the leaders in the final twenty yards and take the decision by a neck' from Hynanna which was only a neck to the good from Bright Glow with Vertigern, Star Area, Mendip and Rapine all well up and Blimp last.
