SYDNEY, Jan. 31. The prank of an apprentice at Port Kembla power -house is leading to a serious industrial upheaval -and as a direct consequence the light and power will be cut off to-hight throughout a large section of .the south coast; and about one thousand workmen will he thrown out of employment. An assurance has been given by the Minister of Public Works, Mr Buttenshaw, that if the employees -carry out their .threat to strike following the. dismissal of the apprentice, the (Government is in a position to maintain the light and power services In the' affected area. Preparations were made yesterday by the Sydney timber'yard and .sawmilling and allied industries for a -strike as from to-morrow. It is expected that if the men refuse to conform, to the' decision o.f the arbitration - court and cease work rather , than accept a forty-eight hours ’ week, the majority of timber yards and' sawmills throughout this and adjoining states will be idle within a few. days. Statements that children of the unemployed are either starving or illnourished were made at a public meeting at Cessn-ock convened by themayor to discuss local distress."
