NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.’') Willi Rapine, l:.c JHLaw.k and Yoma competing an the recently run Wellington Oup, old ago had jnoro than its quota- -or representatives. Since joining J. xVlc-Combe’s stable, Grown Area, has not lost any of. ins pace ana to-day would have a chance in any mile qr seven luncmg handicap, run m tins nonunion. ;1 Jfaquito, the halt brother to the ' Auckland Gap winner. Malaga, impress- « ed in ins race at rienthani last Tuesday, ana lie looks- certain to win luselull’, races. Considering her excellent I‘orin at New l-hymouth, where she beat tne older ana promising Lady q>uex. \ alpre returned a splendid dividend at Tientnam last Tuesday. The JNiglit Raid two-year-old, Night ! Bad, was called on to give V alpre a • mg start over the last ruriong of the : hitzlierbert Handicap at TTentnam, but ue tailed by a short, head. Oil this performance lie will win races. Hot Spring, Royal Bine and Hunting Cry all finisned well in ±he two-year-old handicap at Trentham last Tuesday and with a little luck either may have won. Vivo’s half-brother, Glenartney, showed a lot of speed on the opening uay ox the Wellington meeting, but like several others, Ins chance was; spoilt through running very wide entering the straigiit. Rapine looked bright but was obviously carrying too much superfluous llesli to wm a race like the Wellington Uup; liis showing, however, was good, and he will certainly make his presence left later on. Star fluid and T’oawai both finished better than Airtight on the first day of the Wellington meeting. Nevertheless Airtight ran liis best race and deserved Ins success. Wfieu at the post for tlie Wellington Stakes, Goblin Market was somewhat unruly, and when the tapes rose dashed into Ceremony, and extinguished any chance the latter possessed. Prior to going out for the Wellington Stakes. Childsplay looked better and brighter than at any other period of her career. She was just in behind b'irst Money over the early stages, butsurprised most by failing to run on. Silvermine was drawn No. 15 at the barrier in the Telegraph Handicap on Tuesday last. This, o.f course, did not improve liis prospects. Old Jtereinoana ran of his great races at Trentham last Tuesday. He was giving tlie leaders quite a big start over even the last hundred yards, but putting in a wonderful run he just failed to catch Meadow Bark. The attendance on the first day of the current meeting of the Wellington Placing Oiub was well -up to the average, despite a slight decline in the totalisator receipts. That extra large fields do not go towards increasing tlie totalisator re-i turns, was clearly demonstrated at Trentham last Tuesday, where the fields were of record size, yet the totalisator 1 returns fell short of the corresponding day last year. ! As usual, the dividing of a race at the Wellington Pacing Club meeting pi-oved unpopular, and the totalisator figures on the event were over £2OOO less than in the same event last year. Airtight did not have much to spare at the finish of tlieTrentham HighWcight last Tuesday; in fact, had notH. Burt continued to- ride him Hard when holding a good lead half a furlong from the post, Toawai must have beaten him. The imported Bright Land who was brought to Trentham by H. Gray, ran an excellent race in the High-Weigbt Handicap on Tuesday last, and if a runner to-morrow may prove troublesome to liis opponents. First Money ran a surprisingly good race in the Wellington Stakes, and it was not till the last half furlong bad been entered, that the brilliant Honour got the better of the Trentham trained two-year-old. There was nothing in the nature of luck about the' win of Yertigern in Tuesday’s Wellington Chip; well placed throughout, and beautifully ridden by B. H.' Morris, this much improved gelding won with a little in reserve. The surprise of the recently run Wellington Oup was the fine showing _ot The Hawk; always one of the leading half dozen. The Hawk dashed to the front a furlong and a half from- the wifining post and, although he struggled on, he was unable to hold off Yertigern. Llanore did not leave the harrier quite as well as many of the runners in the Apprentice Plate at Trentham last Tuesday. Her pace carried her to one of the leading positions approaching the straight, but just when Llanore appeared to have good prospects she lost all chance by running wide out; thus losing many lengths. _ That Honour is an exceptionally good one, fit to class with the best youngsters of old, he demonstrated, -by the way he cut down the opposition m Tuesday’s Wellington Stakes. Honoui is heavily topped, and if lie develops much more, might easily prove untramable as a three-year-old; but, if the son of Limond stands up to work, then an A.J.C. or V.R.C. Derby will be well within his compass. WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB. AUTUMN MEETING. The autumn race meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club will be held on the 14tli and 16th of February, and trainers and owners are reminded that nominations for all events, and iorfeits for the Jackson Stakes close at t p.m., on Monday next 28th inst.
