SCOTTISH SPORTS

ATHLETICS AND DANCING. GALA DAY AT STRATFORD. TARANAKI’S ANNUAL GATHERING. Tlie third annual Scottish gathering of the Taranaki Provincial Caledonian Sports Association was held on Victoria Park, Stratford, yesterday. The stormy conditions prevailing on the previous day and night gave place to more congenial weather, and the opening events were favoured by a fairly good audience, which perceptibly increased towards midday and had by 2 p.m. assumed proportions gratifying to the management. A shade over £TOO was taken at the gates. As was to be expected at such a gathering, there was a good attendance of Scottish pipers and dancers, whose bright and varied costumes, lent an air of gaiety to the scene. Four pipe bands (Hawera, New Plymouth, Eltham and Stratford) engaged in a march past at 2.30 p.m., and evoked much favourable comment. The juvenile dancing events were well filled, the number of competitors in each indicating healthy support of future gatherings.. With 120 yards to go Wills made his long-delayed effort, finishing strongly two yards behind S. C. Coleman and 12 yards ahead of the latter’s. brother. Wills’ style differed materially from that of tlie C-oleman brothers, hut the “heel and, toe’’ work of all three was above suspicion.

The day’s festivities concluded with a concert and dance, held in the evening at the town hall, which was graced by a large assemblage, representative of the whole province. Mr. W. G. Simpson, Provincial Chieftain, expressed the thanks of the Association for the public support accorded the sports gathering, which was freely admitted to be growing more popular each year since its revival three years ago. He trusted that the resolve of the association to conduct the gathering in a different centre each succeeding year would further popularise it and that the association would eventually become one of the most important Scottish organisations in the Dominion. The thanks of the management were due to the Stratford Borough Council, the Stratford Sports Club, and the entertainers for assistance, said the chieftain.

The concert programme included songs by the Misses Lunan and McCormick. Mr. P. Aitken, Highland fling (Miss M. Thompson), pipe selections (Messrs' J. Yardley and K, Cameron), Seauntriublias (Miss G. Smytli), foursome reel (Misses G. Smyth and M. Thompson, Messrs N. Cruden and J. Yardley), and an elocutionary item rendered by Mrs Twaddle. Miss Weston played the accompaniments.

For the dance, excellent music was provided by Boulton’s orchestra, and Mr. ,T. Morrison officiated as M.C.
