- ♦ POLICE CASES HEARD. The fortnightly sittings of the Hawera Magistrate’s Court were continued this morning before Mr J. H. bannon, S.M. James Newman, for being on the licensed premises of the Central Hotel after hours on December 24, was fined £1 and costs 10s. Henry Buckley, for a like offence, was fined a similar amount.

Lewis Douglas Robinson was charged with assaulting Prank Patrick Meyers at ITawera. on January 10. After evidence had been given for I the prosecution by Sergeant Henry, defendant pleaded, guilty, and was lined £2 and costs 10s, in default seven days’ imprisonment. MAINTENANCE IN ARREARS. Evelyn William O’Keefe was charged with disobedience of an order under the Destitute Persons Act in respect of maintenance of five brothers and sisters (inmates of ail .industrial school). Arrears amounting to £ls 2s lOd were due at December 8, 1928. Defendant was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended if payment of £5 is made by February 6 and thereafter 12s 6d per week off the arrears. Daniel O’Keefe, father of the previous defendant, was also charged with being in arrears to the extent of £195 Us 3d in respect to the maintenance of his five children. Defendant, who did appear, was sentenced to six months’' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended if £2 10s per week and Is off the arrears be regain rlv paid. TERRITORIALS EINED. For failure to deliver up a great coat, the property of the Defence Department, George William Ernest Leach was ordered to make restitution to the amount of £1 9s 9A and to pay court costs 10s. • Charles John Gates, who also failed to hand in articles of uniform the property of the Defence Department, valued at £4 4s Sd, was ordered to pay the amount claimed and court costs 10 s. DRUNK IN CHARGE OF HORSE. To Hana Tana Hori, an elderly Maori, who was arrested by Constable Pidgeon at Tokaora on Sunday, January 20, for allegedly being drunk while in charge, of a horse, strenuously denied the charge, but admitted having bad. a considerable quantity of liquor. Constable Pidgeon, giving evidence, said that defendant was in a hopeless state of drunkenness, and eventually fell off his lior.se. Witness stayed’ with him for half an hour, later getting him to go home on foot. A fine of £3 and 17s costs was imposed.
