Officials of the Wellington Trotting Club have made the following explanation in regard to the scratching of Native Prince for engagements at the Wellington meeting on Saturday. Mrs. J. El. Sweetapple, owner of Native Prince, telegraphed from Auckland : “Native Prince unfairly handicapped, withdraw all engagements.” The Wellington Club’s officials, discovering that Mrs. Sweetapple had an impression that her horse was handicapped on 15 yards, as published incorrectly in an Auckland newspaper, telegraphed : “Correct handicap of Native Prince is 12 yards; do you wish cancel, scratching?” The club received a tele-

gram from Mrs. Sweetapple: “Accept all engagements.” The Wellington Club rules that it did not receive Mrs. Sweetapple’s first telegram and waited for confirmation of scratching until after she had learend the correct handicap. Under these circumstances it is ruled by the club that Native Prince is an acceptor for Saturday’s meeting at Hutt. Park.
