CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIP ALLOTTED. RECORD NOT ACCEPTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. At a. meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, the 50 yards centre championship Avas allotted to the Wellington Club. It Avas reported that, Avith regard to the performance on Saturday of W. Cameron in swimming the 100 yards championship in 56 4-ssec, three-fifths of a second better than the existing New Zealand record for the distance, it Avas unfortunate that the centre could not recommend its recognition, as the starting board was too high.
HEAVY TAXATION ON MOTORISTS
PALMERSTON N., Jan. 15
When a resolution from the Tauranga County Council favouring a petrol tax or other direct levy on the motorist as the most equitable method to meet, the problem of . upkeep of main roads came before the Kairanga County Council, a councillor said that at the present time motorists AA’ere very heavily taxed. Until the present funds of the Highavays Board proved inadequate, he Avas against any increase. Local Bodies AA’ere at their Avits’ end to find money to obtain the .Highways Board subsidies. The council decided that the motor traffic in the Dominion Avas already overtaxed and that it Avas not fair to put a further tax on it.
