AWATUNA.

V j (From Our Own Correspondent.) i AFTERNOON SOCIAL. The afternoon socials organised for raising funds for the Awatuna Hall have recommenced. On Wednesday at the home of Mrs Alfcy a most entertaining afternoon was spent by the - following guests: Mcsdames Arthur, Thompson, Bankhead, Chubb, Corbett, ' Pope, Hughes, Davison, Niecolls, Hutchings, W. Boyd, Bourke, Lind, Collins (Te Kiri), and the two Misses Corbett. Amongst the above ladies are several who have been most industrious for some weeks making a variety of attractive articles which null be sold at the sale of work to be held in the near future. The competition last Wednesday was won by Mrs. Hughes. There is some doubt as to whether Mrs Chubb or Mrs J. ) Boyd will be the hostess on the 23rd, but a statement will appear in this column later. THE HOLIDAYS. Compared with this time last year tlie weather has left much to be desired. Hopes ran high when Christmas Day proved so delightful, but Boxing Day and much of the wea, tlier since nas been most depressing. Traffic on the Eitham Road has been abnormal, the number of” new cars being most noticeable. The people of Taranaki have every reason to be proud of the large majority of their roads, the freedom from dust and the smooth surfaces comparing most favourably with the pot-holes, choking dust, and awkward grades so often encountered in other provinces. In connection with the traffic passing through Awatuna, some biting comments have been made of late about the reckless speed of motor cyclists. It has been noted that outside cyclists are the offenders. In view of the danger to young children it has been suggested that something should be done before an accident occurs. LOCAL ITEMS. Haymaking is the order of the day, heavy crops being reported from several settlers. As in most districts, haying is carried out on the co-opera-tive system, lots being cast to decide the order in which the crops are gathered in, though in some cases it is left to mutual arrangement. Where there are several fanners concerned, however, the former idea is claimed as the most satisfactory. On one or two evenings lately there has been a big muster at the tennis court, on one occasion less than half a dozen members being absent out of the total membership of nearly 40. The new surface of “colfix” applied to the court has made a great improvement. No matches have been played since Christmas on account of haymaking and holidays calling away some of the players of the local clubs. A party from To Kiri and Taungatarapaid a friendly visit last week, resulting in good practice and a pleas- , ant afternoon. I It appears that the Awatuna Facj t ? r Y las reached a level of production j that constitutes a record for the disj trict. Some weeks ago- as many as 64 J cheeses were turned out one day, > whilst at present, now that the milk supply is naturally less, about 52 per day are being manufactured. There has been a decided increase of suppliers this- season, whilst a further increase next season is expected by some, we are told.
