DISEASED MEAT
PRECAUTIONS AT SMITHFIELD.
LARGE QUANTITIES CONDEMNED. NEW ZEALAND EXEMPT. (United Pres*. Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) —United Service). Received 10.15 a.m. ith-day. LONDON, Jan. 12. The “Weekly Dispatch” asserts that Smithfield is seriously disturbed' by tko •progress of almost world-wide disease in sheep affecting meat imported -into. Britain. Great quantities of Australian and South American mutton are being condemned alt Smithfield. * This -system of inspection has been altered to combat the menace and every carcase of mutton and lamb from Australia! and South America is in addition individually inspected. New Zealand is exempt from special examinations. The disease occurs in the -lympliatis glands and is deep-seated in the shoulders. Mr Will Thorne, M.P., will raise the question in the House -of Commons. He salys he -is dissatisfied with the inspection of meat in the countries of origin, as it is insufficiently rigorofis. The danger seems toi be glossed over. The disease is a menace to healthy particulairly in the poorer districts 1 , where the diseased meat is too frequently brazenly -exposed. The origin of the disease’, which is not tubercular, is believed to lie in the soil.
