A Sheffield Shield cricket match between New South Wales, captained by Kippax, and South Australia, commenced here to-day. New South Wales opened the batting on a perfect wicekt in cool weather. Bradman was caught off Grimmett for five. New South Wales lost five wickets for 343 in the first innings, Jackson contributing 162, Kippax 107, and T. Andrews 32.
CELTIC (STRATFORD) DEFEAT ELTHAM. Playing tit Taumata Park on Thursday, Eltham was beaten by Celtic i* a two innings match. The winners scored 99 (Owen 24, Richardson 16, North and Carter 12 each, Smith. 11) and 39 for five wickets (declared), while the losers replied with 42 and 88 (H. Donnelly 34 and Little 12). For Celtic North took three wickets in each innings, Owen four and Smith three. For Eltham Little was very successful, getting seven wickets in the first and three in the second innings. IN NORTH TARANAKI. The North Taranaki Cricket Division (New Plymouth) has received a challenge from the Country Cricket Association to trial matches between A and B teams, the A teams to play at Tilcorangi and the B teams at Pukekura Park. The date has not yet been fixed. Negotiations are also afoot for a visit to Taranaki by a Wellington representative team at Easter.
