The attitude of the Government towards' the relief of unemployment in tlio towns is made clear in a telegram received on Wedensday by the DeputyChristchurch (Mr D. G. Sullican, M.P.). from the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward). The Prime Minis ter states that Government assistance for the relief of unemployment in the towns must be governed bv suhsich condition®. The telegram, which is in reply to one, sent to tlr© Prime Min is*ter by the Deputy-Mayor on Monday, asking if the Government would make a special grant to enable the, North Canterbury Hospital Board to provide further relief for the next fortnight lias follows : “Regret unable to make tin the,r special payments for unemployment. The Government is now providing for relief work in blue country, but unemployment in the towns must be governed by the subsidy conditions of the Local Bodies' (Relief of Unemployment) Act, enabling; local authorities to undertake works approved by file Public Works Department. Hospital hoards are already subsidised by the Government in terms of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act.”

The need for thoroughly exploring the Urewera Country to ascertain whether a large portion of the land is suitable for settlement has been stressed l>y Mr A. Peebles, of Taneatua, who has maintained for years that a good deal of the high land could be profitably occupied, and the breaking in of the country a safe distance back from the rivers would not be detrimental to the interests of any other part of tbe district. Mr Peebles submitted a letter to the newlyformed Taneatua Progressive League (reports the “Whakatane Press”), and ■that body has endorsed the opinions expressed and passed on tbe representations to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce.
