OUR MAORI COLUMNS
SUMMARY IN ENGLISH.
The Maori Editor's leadiug article in this week’s Aotea announces that “Aotea, the Canoe” has heard the invitation of the people of the various tribes and pahs all through New Zealand aud again leaves the port of its origin with its cargo of news that has been gathered and arranged as the first for the year 1929. The captain stands chanting the old invocations to the gods to keep the Canoe afloat and the weather fair. The writer goes on to deal with land confiscations and at the same time calls the attention of the Maori people to the proposals of the Commission, which are to come into being in 1929. Thereafter, it is hoped, the phrase <|C Mauri grievances” will disappear from the language. ; The second article deals with the maintenance of the purity of the Maori race. In the course of a thoughtful, well-informed article, the Editor discusses the racial question as it exists in Hawaii, as a result of the mixture of the blood of many races, and he exhorts the Maori chiefs to instruct their people that, where they marry outside their own race, their partners should be chosen 'from members of the British community —“The descendants of the people who gave us the Treaty of Waitangi aud the protection of the British flag.” The third item is an account of a recent motor accident on the East Coast, in which Maoris were killed and injured. The fourth discusses the problematical origin of the ancient carving recently found at Kaitaia and the opinion is ventured that it is not the work of a pre-Maori race of inhabitants of New Zoaland, but of the ancient Maoris themselves.
An account of a Maori boy’s brave action in saving life from the surf in the North recently, news in brief, and a translation of an article on animal husbandry complete this week’s Aotea. The “Star’s” now Saturday feature has created widespread interest among the Maori people and this week enquiries for it have come from a chief representing an influential section of the Waikato people.
