NEW PLYMOUTH RACES

CHRISTMAS MEETING OPENED.

CONTESTS IN THE RAIN. HA WEB A HORSES PROMINENT A light fall of rain which set in after , the third race and persisted' throughout the remainder of the day provided moist conditions at New Plymouth yesterday for the greater portion of the opening programme of the' Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting, but the temperature was mild and the steady- downpour appeared td have but little effect on the pleasure provided by-, the racing for a big crowd of enthusiasts 1 armed against the weather with umbrellas and raincoats. ;

'Softened by the early morning rain, the track became somewhat heavy towards the concluding part of the programme but, except for spills in the Christmas Handicap and the Atiawa Cup race (neither of which had serious consequences to horses or riders), the racing was not greatly affected and proved keen and interesting throughout. ■'

The principal event, the. Christmas Handicap, drew a field of nine, among which victory went toMr E. Fryer’s (Hawera) Orazone, trained by the Hawera mentor, Mr J. Fryer, and ridden by H. Piteom, with the New Plymouth candidate, Mint Leaf, in second berth. Eleven appeared in the line up for the cup event, the prize being annexed by the Wanganui gelding, The Warden, owned by Mr F. Bristol and trained by Mr J. N. Coleman, the successful jockey being R. Drinkwater. Another Hawera nominee. Airtight, owned and trained by Mr J. Fryer, took second place. Congratulations to the owner, trainer and rider of-the cup winner were voiced on the conclusion of the race by the club president (Mr L. A. Nolan), and the cup was presented by Mrs Nolan, who also handed a replica of the trophy to the trainer, and a souvenir whip to the jockey.

Hawera trained horses were prominent among the stake winners, taking four first plaeings, four seconds, • and three thirds. Auckland, Wanganui, New Plymouth and Stratford ; candidates each took; a, first placing. Efficient administration was maintained by the officials combining' with the president (Mr L. -.A. Nolan)-and the secretary (Mr E. Pi Webster):. As starter, Mr A. Vincent despatched the fields with a minimum of delay. . In the judge’s box-Mr W. P. .Russell announced the results with - characteristic promptitude and certainty, and . the ( discretion shown as handieapper by Mir E. P. Coyle was evinced in the close finishes which marked the majority of the contests. Mr B. N. Sandilands ..was in attendance as stipendiary steward,: but the racing was pleasingly free of incident calling for action by the judicial committee.

The totalisator returns, as was to be expected from the inclement conditions, showed a decline on the previous year, £25,750 going through the machine as compared with £28,608 on the opening day of the 1927 meeting —a decrease of £2858. . Eire

The favourite and Boundary were first away, but after half a furlong had been covered Valpre went to the front from Lady Quex, Golden Flower, Boundary and Airway. Making a good run Golden Flower joined Valpre in the lead at the three furlong post, the pair then showing the way for Lady Quex, Airway and Monaloff. Gala i Day, Quillfire, Gun Area and Fane declined the hurdles engagement and six runners appeared. In a good betting race Glengariif was most preferred with a margin of 118 tickets from Polyphemus and Horomea, though fourth order, carried only 12 less than Polyphemus. Glengariif was first away, but Berinthia soon moved up to hold the pilot’s position until the final furlong was entered. Passing the stand the first time Berinthia was about six lengths ahead of Horomea, closely followed by Abbot’s Delight, Glengariif and Inahman, with Polyphemus a long w-ay back. Improving at each jump, Berinthia led by about 12 lengths down the back stretch till Glengariif commenced to move up and at the three furlong mark the latter was lying second about two lengths behind Berinthia, with Abbot’s ' Delight running third attended by Horomea. Definite command was taken by Glengariif when moving to the turn, Berinthia falling into second berth followed by Horomea and Abbot’s Delight. Improving rapidly from the last jump, the favourite romped home to win by ten lengths from Horomea, which was about eight lengths ahead of Abbot’s Delight.. Another firm favourite was found in Callapat, which was entrusted with £225 more than Denier, which attracted £425 more than the winner and third faney, Partial Eclipse. Monsogne was fifth order with £7BO less than the favourite. Denier broke from the line-np and ram back to the seven furlong post, causing some delay at the start and subsequently finishing last. Partial Eclipse was quickest to begin from Eortaliee, Callapat, Green Acre, and Monsogne. Passing the five furlong post Fortalice took the lead with Partial Eclipse and Callapat running next, but at the three furlong mark Partial Eclipse again moved to- the front with Fortalice lying second just clear of Monsogne, Callapat, Egeria and Green Acre. Turning into the straight Partial Eclipse was well clear of Fortalice', Monsogne, Callapat and Egeria. Eortaliee was caught by Monsogne at the half distance, but the latter could not reach Partial Eclipse, which finished strongly to win by three and a half lengths from Monsogne, with Eortaliee three and a half lengths back, followed by Egeria, Green Acre, Callapat and Joke Form. Manly was most fancied with £4O more than Mint Leaf, while Oraizone, which was fifth fancy, carried o.nly £2OO less than the favourite. Flying Shot, Alonsoa, Wenday and Manly were most prominent at the jump out and passing the s tand Flying Shot and Wenday were together in the van, followed by Alonsoa, Anolo, Manly and Yoma. Little alteration could be noted along the back stretch till at the half-mile peg Wenday took the lead with Alonsoa and Flying Shot contending second berth, followed by Orazone and Anolo. The latter fell at the three furlong mark and was out of thei race. Wenday was moving well and at the- straight entrance was two lengths to the good from Orazone, Mint Leaf and Alonsoa, but another thrilling finish resulted in Orazone taking first place by half a length from Mint Leaf, with Wenday only half a head back third, followed by Alonsoa, Yoma, Manly, Royal Mint and Flying Shot. Eleven candidates lined tlio Cup race barrier, Acred and Glen Star lading to appear. Fairly even investments left Star Comet as favourite, though Onward carried only £ll less. The Warden was fourth choice with £7O less than the favourite, while Airtight was eighth choice with £l5O below the sum on Star Comet. Going out for the preliminary, The Warden overpowered his rider and galloped a strong mile, but the run did not appear to affect his staying power m the race. Eduloff and Wliisogne made indifferent starts. The most prominent when the barrier rose were Royal Acre, The Warden, Always, Onward, and Airtight. Along the back The Warden took command from Always, Mr tight, Onward, Royal Acre and Star Comet, with Miss Mercia in the rear. When The Warden reached the i half-mile post he had two lengths to spare from Airtight and Always together, Onward, Star Comet and Royal Acre racing next in order. Wkisogne fell at the three furlong bend, but the rider (T. Tito) escaped injury, and later rode the gelding to the saddling paddock. The leader’s margin had decreased at the home bend, The Warden then being only just clear of Airtight, Onward, Royal Acre, Sovena and Miss Mercia, but in a good finish The Warden went on to win by three parts of a length from Airtight, with the fast finishing Sovena half a length back third, folI lowed by Royal Acre, Miss Mercia, | Onward and Gasnapper. Free use of the scratching pen reduced the Tikorangi Hack field to ten, the eight withdrawals being Lueerative, Denier, Goolmint, Audience, Fihey, Monoio, Animated, and Varsity. The ! day’s fourth favourite to figure on the dividend board. Gold Dawn was given £390 more than Argue. The result proved the public toj be right in making the pair first and second choice respectively. Corwen and Rotokare were left when the barrier rose and took no serious part in the race. Gold Dawn was the early leader from Rillett, Ardaile, Merxcis and Owairaka, but with a furlong covered Rillet was leading Gold Dawn, Merxcis and Owairaka. Passing the three furlongs Argue got through on the rails to lead gold Dawn, Rillet, Owairaka, and Merxcis. The home turn showed little to chose between Argue and Gold Dawn, but in the dash home the latter held the pace better and took first, place by two lengths from Argue with Owairaka a length back, followed by Rillet, Merxcis and Annoyer. A field of eleven lined out for the day’s concluding event, Ridgemount and Flying Shot being withdrawn. Te; Atiawa was the public choice, with a margin of 76 tickets from Monaghan, but Paul Lucerne was well down the list with 270 less than the favourite. Whenuanui, Hipo, Seastar, and Te Atiawa were most prominent in the i jump out, but with half a. mile to go Monaghan went up to lead Te Atiawa, Whenuanui and Nastori. The same pair | held the lead at the home turn, but Seastar had reached third birth, attended by Quillfire and Paul Lucerne, and with a fine finishing dash Paul Luceine came up to snatch the victory by nail a length from Monaghan, with_Te Atiawa only half a length back in third birth, followed by Quillfire, Seastar, Takutama, and Whenuanui.
