SCHOOL YEAR. ENDING

BREAKING-UP CONCERT

. The Normanby Town Hail; was crowded do its uttermost capacity last might, many having to stand to listen to the school break-up concert rendered by the pupils. The programme, which was a varied one, consisting of vocal and instrumental items, dialogues, recitations, sketches and Highland dancing, was exceedingly well rendered. The manner. d;n which the performers acquitted themselves showed that a good! deal of time had been spent in itheir tmition, and all those connected with the production of the entertainment are to be congratulated on the success achieved. The items were as follow: —Pianoforte diuet, Joan 'McEwen and Beulah Laurent; “Butterfly” dance, infants; recitation. “Saying His Prayers,” Maurice Wood; dance and chorus, “May Fairies,” infants; ribbon dance, Standards! I. and II.; song, Pauline McEwen (encored); recitation, “Something in My Pocket,” Connie Evans; song and: dance, “On the Bridge of Avionon,” infants; sailor’s hornpipe, Margaret Hopcroft; sketch. K. Tippett and W. Kennedy; song, “Did you ever see a Lassie,” primers; song, “Gomin’ Thro’ the Rye,” Standards 111. and IV.; song and dance, “Hickory, Dickory Dock,” Primers; chorus, ‘Soldiers’ March” Standards I, and II.; recitation, Nancy Frei; chorus, “Come Little Leaves,” Primers; isong, “Rabbits,” Standards I. and II; dance, “Moriego,” Primers; dance, “The Irish Washerwoman,” M. Hopcroft and June Phillips ; piano solo, Esther Mills; dance, “Peapode,” Standards I. and II.; song, “Golden Vanity,” Standard V. boys; May dance, infants; recitation, “The Shingle.” Gordon Hopcroft; song, “Lavender,’’ Standards I. and II; dialogue, Standard VI. girls; Highland Fling, J. Phillips. M. Hopcroft, F. Peach and M. Pickering; Scotch: Reel, J. Phillips. F. Peach, M. Hopcroft, and M. Pickering. At the conclusion of the programme! prizes were distribtued by the chairman of the school committee (Mr A. E. Spratt) .as follow : Proficiency.—M. A.ntrobus, E. Bell, A. Brosnan. E. Harvey, D. Attendance: D. Bennett. G. Ilopcroft, J. Anderson, Ei. Mcßeth. E. Harrison, G. Nicholson, and F. Peach. The chairman complimented the headmaster (Mr Davidson) on the efficient manner in which the school was conducted and remarked that out of. thirteen pupils elegible for proficiency, eleven had passed (ten not having to sit for the examination) and the other two gained competency certificates. In connection with school matters he isaid that Normanby School and grounds were as good as could be found in Taranaki. When the new class room was completed there would be ample accommodation for the scholars. He considered the district was fortunate in having such an able staff of teachers

and the latter were to be congratulated on the work done during the year. He thanked them for the work done in com nection with the concert, especially Mrs Poach, who had spent much time in training the infants, and at his call cheers were given for her. He also wished to thank Mrs W. Bennett, who had kindly offered to play the accompaniments in place of Miss Holly, who was in hospital. In conclusion he trusted the children would enjoy a good holiday. Miss Elaine Kennedy presented beautiful boquets to Mrs Peach, Mrs Bennett and Miss Sheat as tokens of the appreciation felt concerning the training given the pupils. Mr T. Pickering played the accompaniments for the Scotch dancing on the bagpipes, the piano accompaniments being played by Mrs W. Bennett and Miss Sheat. The gathering concluded by the singing of God Save the King.
