The local school broke up yesterday for the usual Christmas holidays, and the annual prize-giving took place in the local hall.

J lie children opened proceedings by rendering a lew songs and recitations, ant) also staged a portion of Oliver Iwist. Air. Huston, chairman of the committee, introduced Air. Dickie, ALP., who then distributed the prizes ami certificates.

Aliss Ilona Afeliarry (dux of the school) presented Aliss Leverscdge. (head mistress) with a small present trotn the senior pupils, and little Joan Clinton presented Aliss Beamish. infant mistress, with a small present on behalf of the infant department. There was also a present for Aliss Olson, another teacher, who has had scarlet fever and consequently could not be present. Aliss Armstrong, who has been relieving teacher whilst Aliss' Olson has been away, also received a small token from her scholars. JJoth scarlet lever and measles have been prevalent in the district for some lime, but all the patients are on the mend ami we hope they will be well enough to be out by Christmas. Grass is very plentiful this season, and the milk supply at the local factory lias kept up well. .There lias been very little variation for the last ten weeks

Ensilage making has been tbe order of tbe day for the last month, ancl most of the farmers have finished and are preparing to start bay-making. Crops of both ensilage and bay are generally heavy this year.

The county council staff is busy on the side roads, and in some instances putting down metal, which will be greatly appreciated.
