GIRL GUIDES.

A breaking-up party was held by the local companies of Girl Guides and Rangers on Monday evening Hast in the Town Hall. Mrs ‘Houston (Divisional Commissioner for South Taranaki) was present, and performed .the ceremony of enrolling the new Guides and Rangers. The following were enrolled as new member%: Misses E. Gilshnan (ranger), J. Mc-Cullum, A. Soirrenson, G. Baylisj. M, Giishnan (guides),. The commissioner also presented service stars to Misses J. Langton, M. Crocker and M. McKenzie.

Mrs Houhton gave a very interesting talk on the Guide camp which was held in Auckland recently, and also, about the new Guide home ait Waitakere Range, in the Auckland district. A musical programme was provided, and included songs, pianoforte solos, duets, .recitations and guide songs-.

Supper was dispensed try the Guides and Rangers. Miss G l . Geary, on behalf of the Guides, presented Mrs Houston with a beautiful bouquet and wished the commissioner and alll a, merry Christmas. The evening closer! with the singing of “Taps” and the National Anthem.

COOKING DEMONSTRATION. A very interesting demonstration, took place in the High School on Saturday afternoon last, when Mi-ss M. Smith, of Auckland, and Mrs W. Hollard. of Kaponga, demonstrated on edect-rioa.l cooking. About fifty ladies attended, and were shown that all classes of cooking can be done with an electric range. At" tlhe conclusion of the .demonstration a- (hearty vote of thanks was accorded the demonstrators, and all who helped to make the demonstration a, -success. GENERAL.

The coloured .lights aero,-the, Main and Napier Streets were .switched on for the first time on Tuesday night and present a brilliant spectadle. A street mailt in aid of the 1 lumket Society was held on Monday and the funds of the society were benefited to the extent of £4 7s 6d.
