EFFORTS TO RELEASE HER FAIL.
SHIP IN SERIOUS' POSITION
United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) Received 1.40 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Dec. 10. Renewed efforts to release the White Star Celtic failed, and further attempts have been suspended until the morning, owing to the danger of working in the darkness. The Celtic was unable to help owing to the boilers being out of commission and the ship being almost in total darkness. A Lloyds’ message from Queenstown states that the i>osition is exposed and serious, though the ship is resting easy. The Celtic* is heavily loaded, ami a heavy swell followdng the gale makes unloading difficult. The mails were taken off to-night_ It is stated that continuance of the present calm is most essential to make the salvage work successful. TREATMENT OF PASSENGERS. PRAISE FOR OFFICERS AND CRIEW. Received 1. 15 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Dec. 10. Two hundred of the Celtic’s passengers left Queenstown for Dublin, Liverpool and London. All were without heavy baggage, which is now being removed from the holds.
The passengers pay the highest tribute to tlm conduct of the officers and crew. Everyone was. called at five o’clock, told to don lifebelts and to take their lifeboat stations. Two liouis later they sat down to a comfortable breakfast before being taken off.
