NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(BY “MAECENAS.’-) The Woodville Jockey Club will open their summer meeting to-morrow and conclude on Thursday. The Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting takes place on Friday and Saturday next, while the annual meeting of the Waipa Racing Club is set down for Saturdav.

At many past meeting of the Waipa and Woodville Clubs well performed candidates were raced with a view of fitting them for the more important meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, which is due to take place a few days after the clubs named. This year the two ismnller clubs have received a limited number of horses engaged at Fllerslie, but in comparison with many Former gatherings they are negligible. While the Woodville and Waipa Clubs lire not to have many first-class performers at, their coming meetings, it i« to the advantage of their patrons, as at many past meetings on those courses first-class handicap horses were j raced, hut, to the disgust and loss of | backers, performed like third-raters, j only to reveal their true and vastly improved form at Ellerslie. On consideration it must be admitted that it is much better for both racing clubs and its patrons that aii even second-

class lot compete at a meeting in place of better class (performers who are short of work or, worse still, are not allowed to show tlieir true form. For one with little experience on a race track, Elicit showed pace and jumped well at the h'eilding meeting. Elicit is engaged in the hurdle race at Woodville to-morrow, and may again run well, but honhonune, lied Bank, ! and Panorama all will cause bother at I the finish. I Several of a large number of entries for the Trial Plate at the Woodville meeting have on odd occasions shown pace in races, ami on the excellent track of the Woodville Club should show their best form. Shot Silk, The Warden, Connoisseur, and St. Melba are all promising maidens. St Melba and Shot Silk may do best to-morrow. The Woodville Handicap has attracted only eight acceptors, and under 8.13 Hoylake will have to produce his best to win. David Garrick and Catkin both run a solid ten furlongs, and, if favoured by their immediate connections, will be very prominent at the finish. A number of smart hacks figure in the Flying Hack Handicap at Woodville. "Millais is a useful three-year-old, and has the advantage of being well seasoned. Knightlike and Second Thought have at times shown speed and, if able to reproduce such to-mor-(row, will make things interesting for their opponents. Only nine appear in the Oete Handicap at the Woodville meeting, but as several of these have displayed fair form of late, they will at least infuse interest into the handicap. The Raider won at the recent meeting at Feilding, but the long straight at Woodville will not enhance his prospects tomorrow. Toxeuma and Arrow Lad are a solid pair, and the long straight will be in Miss Pat’s favour. Quite a good class of two-year-old has been accepted for in the Nursery Handicap, and the event may take some winning. On public form Hunt-i ing Day will be very troublesome, as lie is a good youngster. Clever has a private reputation, though thus far has disappointed; but she can gallop, and may prove so to-morrow. Of the others Royal Line and the unruly Imperial Guard both have speed, and should make a; good race with Hunting Day arid Clever. If Staghunter were to show his true form in the Borough Handicap lie would take a power of beating, but he is most unreliable this season. Chelone is fast, and is well just now, while Royal Game (if reserved) and Star Area go to make a quartette that must be considered. Kalos continues to register minor placings and is always finishing better than most of his opponents. Perhaps this gelding will do better on the “roomy” course at Woodville. Courageous and Skyrider are a pair that should race well under their light weights.
