PATEA.

(From Our Own Cbrrespondent.) BEACH IMPROVEMENTS. A, public meeting of those interested in the proposed improvements at the local beach was held recently, Mr It. S. Finlayson presiding over a very representative gathering. The chairman briefly outlined the purpose of the meeting, viz., to render the beach more attractive to the public. Mr Finlayson then gave an account of what had been already accomplished. A swimming eamical organised last year had realised £3O, and this sum, in addition to other amounts collected, was expended upon making a new road to the beach. The chairman made special mention of Mr T. J. Scott, who. first mooted the scheme, and without whose efforts there would have been m> road to-day. Mr W. O. Glenny had placed large quantities of metal on the road and had given standing orders to his employees ho keep the road in order. Of the immediate requirements, Mr Finlayson mentioned a parking place for cars and the laying on of water to the beach. The question before the meeting was to discuss ways and means of providing the necessary amount to bring this scheme to fruition. Permission had been granted by the borough council in regard to the water scheme. After a lengthy discussion the following matters were definitely decided upon : That a queen carnival be held (date mot yet decided); that candidates be chosen to the number of five (including one from the natives) by sub-com-mittees, who are to report to a meeting to be held next Thursday; that a swimming carnival be held independently of the queen carnival (dates for both to' be decided at a meeting to be held next Thursday). CONVENT SCHOOL. The local Convent School broke up yesterday for the Christmas vacation—somewhat earlier than usual, owing to the continued epidemic of measles. PERSONAL. Mrs W. 0. Glemiy is at present indisposed. I
